SHANGHAI - City of Many MoodsLocated on the coast of the East China Sea, Shanghai, the largest and most prosperous city in China with a population of about 18 million, enjoys a convenient and advantageous geographic position as a transportation hub. Shanghai is no doubt the cradle of Chinese modern civilization and formerly was the financial, trade and transportation center of Far Eastern Asia. In the modern era, it has undergone great changes and is known as the "power engine" of the whole of China in economic development, finance, and culture.
The city is the gateway to the rich and rapidly-growing Yangtze River Delta region. With the recent introduction of high-speed trains to both Nanjing (capital of Jiangsu Province) and Hangzhou (capital of Zhejiang Province), it has become even more convenient to travel beyond the city. With two great airports (Pudong and Hongqiao), it's also easy to jet away to other cities in China and all around the world. Shanghai seems like a collection of smaller cities within one big metropolitan area. Each of these "cities" has a distinctive feel and flavor to it. The contrasts are really amazing, from the fast-moving, ultra-modern and chic Xujiahui and Lujiazui to the slow and steady pace of the ancient water towns of Zhujiajiao and Fengjing; from the bright lights and hip places like Xintiandi to the small shops selling Shanghai's famous dumplings (xiaolongbao) near Yu Garden. Visitors will be deeply awed when they walk along the Bund and gaze over to the Pudong side at the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Jin Mao Tower and the newly-built Shanghai World Financial Center. Walking along the Huangpu River waterfront is like retracing the steps of history when Shanghai was a booming financial and trade center. Watching the ships moving up and down the river is an amazing sight, at day or at night. There is no place like it in the world! There are attractions galore in Shanghai for both the visitors and the residents. The Shanghai Museum is a personal favorite of lots of visitors from home and abroad and undoubtedly the best of its kind in China. Just seeing the collection of ancient bronze artifacts there is worth your trouble of coming to Shanghai. But if art is not up to your "speed," you can head out to the wonderful new Shanghai Automobile Museum in Jiading and feast your eyes on a great collection of vintage cars. The most exciting thing to witness here soon in Shanghai will be the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China. It is the first one to incorporate a "city" theme for the World Expo. Shanghai has selected the main theme of "Better City, Better Life", which centers on the future of urban life, a global topic. This Expo will offer a brand new focal point for the innovation and enhancement of the world's urban civilization. Shanghai and its World Expo will provide a vivid model for urban harmony and the sustainable development of humankind. To date, 228 countries and international organizations have officially confirmed their participation in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai. So, it's going to be a "big party" where people of all colors and creeds can share ideas, learn more about each other and make good friends. Come and discover and experience this exciting and dynamic city of Shanghai where east meets west.
